Reproduction Tron Handle comparison

The recent release of reproduction Tron handles has caused quite a stir in the collecting community. NOS handles are difficult to find and command a premium when they do pop up for sale. The fact that Randy over at GroovyGameGear is selling his “factory original” reproductions for a mere $24.95, with a trigger and top screw, is a big deal.

Reproduction Tron Handle

I ordered two handles on Sunday and received them today via USPS, pretty quick. Do the handles meet collectors exacting standards? How do they compare to an original or a previous reproduction handle? Let’s find out.

The handles arrived in a standard VHS type priority box without any packing material, just the handles and my receipt. They appeared to be undamaged, sealed in a plastic pack. I opened them up and gave them a quick inspection, they were crisp and clean. No messy mold lines, clean through holes for the screws and the brass insert for the top screw. Everything looked great so far.

I took the NoSheeples (RGVAC) hand molded reproduction (far left), an original NOS set (center) and the new GroovyGameGear reproduction (right), and laid them side by side. I used a completely dark room, with one 24″ black light tube approximately 1 foot above the parts. Without any other light in the room I think the difference is obvious.

The NoSheeples reproduction does not glow very well. The BL needs to be closer and direct to get anything at all. It is almost lost in the dark room against the black floor. It also has flash from the mold that needs to be cleaned off and there are slight fit issues between the two halves. The parts have a dull sound when dropped and seem to be made from a very soft plastic.

The NOS piece is at least half good under the BL. I bought this as NOS but only one half glows, not sure what’s up, but it appears to be original. The NOS is much brighter than the hand made repro, with clean mold lines and all the quality you’d expect from an NOS part. It would look good if both halves had the reactive plastic. When carefully dropped it has a dense, molded plastic sound, crisp and sharp.

The GGG piece glows brightly under the black light, as does the included trigger. The plastic has a lighter blue tint to begin with and is stunning when under the BL. Upon close inspection it appears to be identical to the NOS part. Same mold lines, same injection points, identical. I would say it came from the original mold or at least from one of the duplicates floating around as stated by GGG. The trigger also glows brightly and adds a nice touch. It has the same quality appearance with a brighter glow. When carefully dropped it has a sound somewhere between the repro and NOS stick; slightly softer than the NOS piece, but denser than the NoSheeples version.

Installing it was very easy and took just a few minutes. Be careful when attaching the leaf switch for the trigger as the screw post is not pre-threaded. Make sure you use a self tapping screw to cut the threads or you can bind a screw in the plastic. If it breaks off you’ll be screwed (ha!). A final note, the NOS half fit perfectly with the GGG part. The NoSheeples piece didn’t fit well with either. So there you have it. NOS is great, but at $24.95 with a brighter appearance, you can’t go wrong with the new repro.

    Hey Chris,

Make sure you latch that control panel down this time :)

Yours look really good too. I replaced my original one and its a perfect match just like you said. Mine glows about the same as the original, but in the light, the original looks a very slight tint darker. Great work on the write-up.

Those things are ridiculously beautiful…makes you really appreciate a guy more when he has already produced a lot of great stuff and everything he continues to make is just about perfect….if not completely perfect.

@Tronic: It just makes replacing handles easy! I did latch it down this time.

No my problem is the cab looks like crap with a brand new joystick. I need to restore my game to match. Restoring a tron is a lot of work, ugh.

I realized from the KLOV thread that everyone may not know that “nosheeples” was the RGVAC handle for the guy that ran Specialty Plastics. He did a few needed repros back in the day, including DK buttons.

That looks awesome! I should be getting mine today. Can’t wait. I didn’t have the “one half glows” problem like so many others have had. Mine was already in great shape, but the aged discoloration alone makes this a great deal. I can’t wait to see how well the new one glows on my panel.

Just got my tron machine today. The cool thing about my it wasn’t im any arcade that people that had it bought it new when it came out. The only main thing that needs restore is the inside side artwork and the outside is in great shap except close to the edge where people normally put their hands anyone know where I can get the artwork and so that it glows in the dark? My panal artwork is perfect but I looked on a site and they have a panel artwork and buttons and they compare it to the old and the show the new and the new artwork and butto0ns glows better. Is that cause the old was worn or cause its was just not as bright of a color? Also the Bulb behind the logo, the blacklight, and the light in the back needs to be replaced cause there all out. Everything elase works perfect. I looked on one site fir the side artwork and the full package is 169 bucks ugh i already spent a fortune on it already lol. Wll im going to enjoy restoring this even if it costs me. I already have an orignal Ms Pacman and a Orignal Klax machine and love collecting them. I also can’t wait for the new movie on December 17th and want the new Tron Adidas Lightup Sneakers =).

Also the key they gave me only works for the front and not the back. Whats the best way to get that opened and get a new key made? A locksmith? How much will that cost for them to pick it and make a new key?

Check phoenix arcade for the artwork and just drill out that lock, no need to spend money on a locksmith.
