During our very successful game party last year, my Mad Planets decided to malfunction. The fire button died and made the game impossible to play. I’ve been delaying the repairs because of my schedule until a recent flurry of Mad Planets activity forced my hand. I helped Jeff Rothe rebuild the beautiful example of the game he found. (see rotheblog) Then Bill Karkula asked to use my MP spinner and joystick to test out some MP board repair, so the control panel was off the game and I had no excuse!

The first step was to disassemble the joystick and grind some of the surface rust off the metal shaft. It cleaned up nicely, then I gave it a zinc primer coat followed by two coats of semi gloss and a clear coat. I reassembled the joystick, bending the mangled cherry switch back into correct shape and soldering some new lead wires in place. No problems. Now when I went to put it back on the game I just couldn’t do it. I knew I had a nice reproduction overlay stashed away and maybe it was time to put that on as well. Why not. So, I stripped off the rest of the cp parts and the cpo.

The old cpo came off pretty easy by scraping with a chisel. Its been real hot here in Chicago land, and the cpo was pliable. Now all I have to do is strip the adhesive and sand it down a little. If it cools off I’ll paint it, if not, maybe just a clear coat. I’m also thinking that I should get to work on reproducing the Gottlieb insert that goes on the joystick. The gorf insert is not original and I know a few people that are looking for them. Stay tuned.

I haven’t tackled a pin restoration yet, but at some point I’ll start on the firepower machine I have that’s been waiting for a little TLC. This thread over in RGP got me thinking about my pin project and about pinball restoration efforts in general.

Read the RGP thread here.

I think the new process is a great idea and hopefully a less costly alternative to silk screened glass reproductions. Knowing a little about silk screening from my Berzerk control panel reproductions, I can only imagine the time and effort required to produce a repro pin glass. The cost certainly reflects this. Being able to produce the same quality effect on a translite could be a fantastic way to repro some backglass art that might otherwise never get done.

Pinball restorations are a worthy cause, let Steve Young or the pin community in general know how you feel. Get involved and help save some games!

This restoration has been a serious pain in the butt. I ruined one of my carefully laminated side panels in my last effort, (See part two for that story.) and would need to make another panel. I had enough scrap material to join and make a new panel, so I gave it a try. It worked out well and I figured that after laminating it, you’d never know it was two pieces. Unfortunately during the sizing portion, I cut about 4″ more off the bottom than I should have. Measure twice, cut once, words to live by. I bit the bullet and purchased another piece of material. This time I got it right.

I carefully lined up the new, pre-cut blank on top of the other blank I had already laminated but not cut. I then used screws through the carriage bolt holes to secure the pieces in place. No movement this time.

Once secure and clamped to the saw horses I used my trim router to cut out the shape. I took about a 1/4″ per pass until I had only a bit left. Then I flipped it over and finished it off on the black laminate side. I was concerned about chipping the laminate and this worked out perfectly.

After completing the panels, I started to layout the blocking and nail it in place. I used the remaining old panel to measure locations. Everything was coming together nicely.

I also cut the blank for the new bottom piece and cut the air vent holes on the drill press. I used the blast cabinet to strip the rust of the brackets that were mounted on the bottom. They had seen the most water damage and had some serious rust. A little zinc primer and a coat or two of black and they are good to go.

I’ll let the parts dry a bit and then I’ll attempt to dry fit everything before I start fastening it all in place. Since I was planning to reuse the front section and the top angled pieces a dry fit will be important to make sure I judged the sizes and blocking placement correctly.

This article is in no way meant to give an exhaustive account on how to repair a missing chunk of laminate, or what type of router bits should be used, or what type of adhesive, etc. There are plenty of places to find such information, such as coinopspace, byoac, or even search the RGVAC archives in Google Groups. It has already been covered, extensively, so search. I am simply throwing out a little “history” on laminates as I seem to get one or two emails per month asking the question, “What laminate did you use in the plans for the Ms. Pac-Man cocktail table?” This simple question has a not so simple answer.

What is a laminate?

Taken from Wikipedia, “A laminate is a material constructed by uniting two or more layers of material together. The process of creating a laminate is lamination, which in common speech refers to the placing of something between layers of plastic and sealing them with heat and/or pressure, usually with an adhesive. Examples of laminate materials include Formica and plywood. Formica and similar plastic laminates (such as Pionite, Wilsonart or Centuryply Mica) are often referred to as High Pressure Decorative Laminate (HPDL) as they are created with heat and pressure.”

Important to understand what we’re dealing with first and now you’re asking, “How does this relate to arcade games? “ If you’re already an avid collector you know this answer, if not, many classic arcade games had laminated sides instead of paint. Why? It was cheaper. You could buy the crappiest particle board or plywood sheets and cover up all the imperfections with a nice sheet of thick laminate. Laminate was produced in large production runs which kept its price low and made it an attractive alternative to a full scale painting operation. I’d even speculate that many of the builders responsible for early arcade cabinets were cabinet makers by trade and using laminates was second nature to them. Hence the arcade cabinet name. Most of the major arcade game manufacturers used laminate, if not on a full size upright cabinet, then on the cabaret or cocktail versions of the game. Laminated games were everywhere during the hey-day of arcades.

Repairing or replacing laminate

Laminated cabinets were not meant to last. Any avid collector has had his or her fair share of broken corners, swollen sides, gouges and dings. Repairing this damage is relatively easy; getting your repair to match the rest of the cab is another story. You either need some excellent faux finish ability to paint up your patched area, or you have to find a replacement piece of laminate. Good luck. When I took on the restoration of Tapper CT #300, it had a major chunk of cabinet damage, gouges and a crack in the particle board. I was pretty sure that #300 was one of, if not the last Tapper CT made and I wanted to do a good job. I stripped off all the laminate and prepped the cab for new material. Oops, that was a mistake. After searching and searching for an exact match I discovered that it just didn’t exist. I talked to suppliers, distributors and even the sales people at Wilsonart. The answer I got was the same. Product runs from the 80’s became obsolete and once the stock ran out, that was it. It’s probable that manufacturer’s, like Bally Midway, bought out the entire remaining inventory of a color because it was discontinued and heavily discounted. Once they used it up, that’s it. Many of the dies, glues or other materials used in manufacturing the laminate would change over time. Running another batch of laminate now, to match the various 80’s wood grains, would be costly and not 100% guaranteed. Even the material I used a few years ago on the Ms. Pac CT seems impossible to find now that Home Depot stopped carrying it.

So what does that mean? If you have to do a complete arcade game in laminate, either a new build or a restoration, find a color, pattern or shade that you like and go with it. Don’t stress over a slightly unmatched bit of laminate. Don’t fret if your beautiful restoration project has English oak color laminate sides instead of plain medium oak. Slide the cabinet between two others and you won’t even know the difference! Well, you might know, but you’re guests never will. Happy gaming.

The control panel on a Vectorbeam Space War is a strange and complex construction. There are no joysticks or typical round arcade buttons, only rows of square buttons. Old school, IBM typewriter style buttons. As you can see, 30+ years of crud starts to make the buttons look like fuzzy teeth. Everything needed a good cleaning. So after removing the cp plexi, the instruction plexi and the light fixture, I was able to remove the buttons. There are four separate “banks” of button assemblies, each on its own pcb and connected to the wiring harness. The selection buttons are numbered 0 to 9 while the remaining buttons are just plain white without any text. Maybe not bright white, more like a faded captains chair white.

After carefully removing the tiny nuts from the bottom of the pcb, you can carefully remove the button assembly, revealing an odd looking glass tube with some leads. This is called a reed switch. When the button moves up and down it passes a small magnet over the tube which effectively opens and closes the switch. I’m told they are very durable and should last a long time with proper care.

The buttons that were numbered came as larger assemblies with a shared housing. The others had individual housings. I took them all off the pcbs and disassembled each one. Each individual button consisted of 9 small parts, amazing how much effort went into making these things! I used a little oxy clean in a small bucket of warm water and let the parts soak. After about 20 minutes I started taking them out one by one and cleaning each bit with an old toothbrush. Lots of work, but after a good rinse you can see a huge difference. The buttons still have a bit of aging or yellowing, but they look 100% better.

I picked up my parts from the powder coater, Pro-Tek, on Tuesday. To my surprise they were grey! I made two major mistakes with my first run at Pro-Tek. The first was that I only looked at a tiny 1″ x 1″ catalog sample of the hammered finish. It was labeled as a black finish, but not true black (can’t remember the name). It looked black enough to me at the time and I really wanted the textured finish. The second mistake is that I didn’t stress the color issue with Jay. I should have made it crystal clear that black was the expected outcome. The sample I chose from the catalog of colors matched the parts perfectly. When the finish was stretched across a 25″ control panel, it takes on a different appearance as the black is almost completely lost in the grey. The finish itself is fantastic. Jay did a wonderful job with his blasting and powder coating work. The parts would be amazing other than the color issue. Next time I’ll be using gloss black or we’ll investigate a true black hammered finish. Not sure what I’m going to do with the parts that will be visible and should be black. I’ll either top coat them with an oil base enamel or possibly have Pro-Tek paint them again. The parts that aren’t visible or I’m not as concerned about will stay as is.

Now that the game is completely stripped, it’s time to start repairing the cosmetic issues. I’ll get to the buttons later. Since this game is considered rare and has almost complete side art, it’s worth a little effort to protect the artwork. I used blue painters tape to completely mask off both sides of the artwork. Then I used an x-acto to trim the excess off. I used the delicate surface blue tape, which is a little kinder to the surface you apply it to and you have 14 days before it needs to be removed. I’m hoping I can get the work done in that time frame. I pulled the cab out of the garage on my machinist dolly – what a great investment – and determined the amount of cab I’d need to cut off to repair the bad corner and the swelled bottom particle board. I positioned my saw board and cut away.

After removing the chunk off the side I also pulled off the bottom and the back part with the vent. They had minor issues but overall it would be easier to just replace them with new pieces. The table saw makes it simple to cut new parts so why not take advantage of the opportunity to make it a really clean restoration. I used a little contact cement under the front laminate as it had started to de-laminate a bit. Even after clamping I only had moderate success. I got enough down to keep it from pulling away from the cab, good enough. I cut the bottom and back pieces and reattached the newly repainted mesh screen.

I cut the replacement panels for each side and used black and white vinyl laminate to match the original finish. The inside of the space war is this textured black vinyl and outside is white. Brian at game stencils supplied the vinyl, great stuff. Wasn’t sure how to work with it, but I just applied it directly to the particle board and it worked perfectly. Once I had both panels covered in vinyl I could attach them to the cab. I used a slot cutter and #10 biscuits to join the panels.

I used the saw board again to trim the excess from the new panel, after it was dry. The front of Space War has an angled edge and the saw board was the easiest way to match the angle. I also cut and fit a small block into the upper corner that had damage. I used a utility knife and a chisel to remove the damaged area. It was too small of a piece to cut out with the circular saw. Using a utility knife and a straight edge was a pain, but it got the job done. I used the chisel to clean it up. I cut a slot and used a laminated piece with a biscuit for a solid replacement corner. I used the saw board again to trim the excess. The grooves in the surface are for the filler material when I get to that point in the restoration process.

The last thing I had to do before working on the other side of the cab was to cut a template of the area around the control panel. The other side was damaged and creating a template would allow me to fit in a block and cut to shape later. I used 1/4 birch ply to make the template.

I’ll wait until I’m finished with the wood repair before I start on the filler material. Next update will be the other side and assembly. Stay tuned!
