During our very successful game party last year, my Mad Planets decided to malfunction. The fire button died and made the game impossible to play. I’ve been delaying the repairs because of my schedule until a recent flurry of Mad Planets activity forced my hand. I helped Jeff Rothe rebuild the beautiful example of the game he found. (see rotheblog) Then Bill Karkula asked to use my MP spinner and joystick to test out some MP board repair, so the control panel was off the game and I had no excuse!

The first step was to disassemble the joystick and grind some of the surface rust off the metal shaft. It cleaned up nicely, then I gave it a zinc primer coat followed by two coats of semi gloss and a clear coat. I reassembled the joystick, bending the mangled cherry switch back into correct shape and soldering some new lead wires in place. No problems. Now when I went to put it back on the game I just couldn’t do it. I knew I had a nice reproduction overlay stashed away and maybe it was time to put that on as well. Why not. So, I stripped off the rest of the cp parts and the cpo.

The old cpo came off pretty easy by scraping with a chisel. Its been real hot here in Chicago land, and the cpo was pliable. Now all I have to do is strip the adhesive and sand it down a little. If it cools off I’ll paint it, if not, maybe just a clear coat. I’m also thinking that I should get to work on reproducing the Gottlieb insert that goes on the joystick. The gorf insert is not original and I know a few people that are looking for them. Stay tuned.

I’m a big video arcade game fan, but do love a good game of pinball. I own LOTR and have a project Firepower pending, but a recently acquired Flight 2000 pinball machine by Stern, see coinopspace for details, has motivated me to try my hand at pin restoration. After stripping most of the playfield parts I found myself at that point where its tough to get at the stuff underneath the playfield. It was time to create a playfield rotisserie. What’s that you ask? Exactly what it sounds like. A big contraption that allows you to rotate your playfield and access both sides easily. Playfields are big, heavy and awkward. Using one of these tools makes dis-assembly and final reassembly a much easier task.

I did some research and decided to model my rotisserie after the one found on Ed Cheung’s website. If you’ve never seen his site I recommend taking a look, he has some inspiring work on display. I bought the materials and used lumber I had on hand. The materials cost about $65, pricey, but still cheaper than a store bought PF rotisserie.

I made two mistakes here. First was the length of 2×4′s clamped on the table should have been longer. Second, my table was not sturdy enough to hold the weight and I had to prop up the mechanism. No good. I would have to build a different model for better stability. Not a big deal, just took more time.

I built two A frames and mounted all the hardware. Two scrap pieces of 1×4 made nice support struts on the bottom. I wasn’t going for anything fancy or adjustable, just stable. I’ll just remove the struts when I’m done, easy. I sized the length for the Flight 2000 playfield and mounted it in place with some C clamps. Works great and will make the removal of the remaining hardware a breeze.

Flash back all the way to October of 2001, not too long, but an eternity when you think about the advances in technology since that time. I had picked up my very first cabinet, a Galaga UR and was anxious to restore it to its former glory. I think it is very important to document the strip down of any cabinet, primarily so you can remember where stuff goes, but also to share the details with the collecting community. I didn’t have a digital camera back then and was taking pics with my 35mm camera, a slow process.

I decided to borrow a friends digital Sony Mavica for instant results. Cutting edge at the time with its little 3″ removable disc media. Wow, what a difference, I can’t imagine using a 35mm ever again! I stripped the cab of all its parts and started to clean it up. The bottom and lower back of the cabinet were water damaged and the cab was missing a wheel, so drag damage. I figured I could just swap in some new panels and repaint/laminate. Easier said than done as Midway used these bizarre RTA (ready to assemble) connectors all around the bottom piece. I guess for ease of assembly.

I was able to find replacement RTA fasteners that were almost exact duplicates of the originals. They weren’t cheap (imports from Germany) but I was trying to repair it correctly. I cut new blanks for the bottom, back and back door. I sanded, patched and sanded the entire cab to make sure it was nice and smooth. I would paint the back components, but for the sides I was going to install some nice black laminate for durability.

I installed leg levelers and casters. I couldn’t find a spare original caster and since I only had one was forced to settle for a pair I found at Ace Hardware. I had rewired the cabinet after bringing it inside to install the artwork and Lisa was in charge of play testing to make sure it was working properly. Well, she hit level 21 and got this lovely message, “This player too hot. My electronic brain is scrambled. Immediate shutdown. Danger, danger, danger.” Then the darn game would reset. WTF is that? She tried it again and sure enough, same thing, but this time I got the pictures below. Apparently some Operator wanted to make sure you couldn’t play too long on just one quarter! Funny stuff.

This restoration has been a serious pain in the butt. I ruined one of my carefully laminated side panels in my last effort, (See part two for that story.) and would need to make another panel. I had enough scrap material to join and make a new panel, so I gave it a try. It worked out well and I figured that after laminating it, you’d never know it was two pieces. Unfortunately during the sizing portion, I cut about 4″ more off the bottom than I should have. Measure twice, cut once, words to live by. I bit the bullet and purchased another piece of material. This time I got it right.

I carefully lined up the new, pre-cut blank on top of the other blank I had already laminated but not cut. I then used screws through the carriage bolt holes to secure the pieces in place. No movement this time.

Once secure and clamped to the saw horses I used my trim router to cut out the shape. I took about a 1/4″ per pass until I had only a bit left. Then I flipped it over and finished it off on the black laminate side. I was concerned about chipping the laminate and this worked out perfectly.

After completing the panels, I started to layout the blocking and nail it in place. I used the remaining old panel to measure locations. Everything was coming together nicely.

I also cut the blank for the new bottom piece and cut the air vent holes on the drill press. I used the blast cabinet to strip the rust of the brackets that were mounted on the bottom. They had seen the most water damage and had some serious rust. A little zinc primer and a coat or two of black and they are good to go.

I’ll let the parts dry a bit and then I’ll attempt to dry fit everything before I start fastening it all in place. Since I was planning to reuse the front section and the top angled pieces a dry fit will be important to make sure I judged the sizes and blocking placement correctly. Let’s hope so, more to come!

Our first annual party was quickly approaching and I only had a few weeks to finish up the space war. I wanted to move it into the game room for people to enjoy. The cosmetic restoration to the cabinet was done; I just needed to finish putting everything back into the cabinet and hope that it fired up. The only thing holding me back was the control panel. The powder coating turned out too grey for this panel and would need to be painted again. I gave the panel a light sanding on the visible surfaces only and then a coat of black oil base Rustoleum satin paint. I used an HVLP spray gun and sprayed two light coats in short intervals. The paint stuck to the powder coating without issue.

I allowed the paint to dry a full day before I put on the clear coat. The finished panel looked great so I put it on the side and moved on to the next step. I brush painted the back door and the bezel frame with a fresh coat of black. I allowed that stuff to dry and started the re-assembly of the guts for the control panel. I purchased a new fluorescent fixture and some weather stripping to use for the “beer gasket”. It took me a few minutes of reviewing the old pictures to figure out how the whole thing was meant to go together, but I did finally get it. I almost spent some time touching up the flaked areas on the control panel marquee, but since I’ve heard some horror stories about bad touch-ups, I opted to leave it alone. A bad touch up is very obvious once the game is lit up. I’m anxious to get the completed panel back on the cab.

I then cleaned up the wiring harness and verified all the pins and sockets were good. I took apart and cleaned the counter and removed the old speaker with the deteriorated paper cone. The paper cone was falling apart as I moved it around until the whole outside edge had flaked away. I’d need a new speaker. There is no manual for the Vectorbeam version of the game available online and the Cinematronics manual doesn’t specify, so I grabbed an 8ohm speaker. I’d test it before installing. I cut a new cardboard bezel using a pvc end cap to get the right corner radius. I was ready.

I took everything out to the garage to re-assemble. While assessing the cab I realized 3 things; first that I forgot to cut the cord slot in the back, second that I didn’t finish up enough carriage bolts for mounting the cp and third, I am missing the coin box cover. No idea what happened to it, but the garage is a mess, I’m hoping it turns up. The other two items I could correct. I nailed the monitor cut out, cross brace and bezel frame back into place. I also put on the cp, mounted the monitor and the rest of the cab guts. You’ll notice that nothing sits low in this cab. Great if you ever have a flood and also easier to access. I fired up the game and got some shaky vectors and zero sound. I panicked as the party was only a few days away. I called Mark H and Bill K for advice, both great techs, mark especially gifted with Cinematronics. Armed with suggestions from Mark, I dropped off the board set at Bill’s house for him to look over that evening. In the meantime I’d move the game into the basement. I had to cut new holes for the speaker mounting, as the new one didn’t line up. I covered the openings with blue tape to prevent metal shavings from sticking to the magnet. I installed the speaker and grill using torx head screws.

Shortly after getting the cab into the basement, I got a call from Bill. He was dropping off a working pcb! As much as I would have liked to work on this pcb myself, under a time crunch you go with the pros. Bill came through in a pinch, thanks Bill. With the speaker in place and the pcb installed again the game was fired up and played great. She was ready for the party and for a place in the game room. Thanks to everyone who helped make this restoration possible, you know who you are

Picking up from where I left off with the restoration (part one), I got a postcard from Menards stating that my laminate was ready for pickup. The box it came in was huge. I got it home safely and pulled out a sheet of the wood grain laminate. To my surprise the stuff was longer than a sheet of plywood by about 4 inches.

This would allow me to cover a whole sheet of plywood with room to spare, good if you’re building cabinets, but a pain to work with for a cabaret. I cut the sheet down into usable pieces which was approximately 24″ x 55″ each. I also cut two blanks of birch plywood to size as well. The plan was to laminate the blanks and then use one of the original cabinet sides as a template to re-cut the cabinet shape. I figured I could save my self some time doing it this way. Good plan in theory. So I laminated both sides of the blanks using contact cement and a paint roller, while that dried, I removed all the blocking from one of the original panels and got all set up to route the cabinet shape. I made two errors. The first is that I should have cut the shape before laminating and then just used a laminate trimmer and the second, that I didn’t fasten the blank to the original with anything other than clamps. The clamps moved on me and the router took out more than it should have. I was planning to live with it since it was in back, but then while routing from the front side, the original panel started to crumble and deteriorate. This caused the router to skip and grind away at the panel. Needless to say it was ruined. I would use it to make replacement parts for the remainder of the cabinet, instead of just tossing it out.

After that little screw up I decided to turn my attention to remaking the cabinet blocking and cleaning up the control panel. I used 1″ x 3″ and was able to duplicate the blocking pretty quickly, using a simple jig for angle cuts on the table saw. After the parts were cut I painted all the visible sides. The control panel I just peeled or scraped off the old cpo. There was so much rust underneath it came off without much trouble. The panel would get powder coated at Pro Tek and I’d probably have to do a custom cpo as I’ve never seen an NOS cabaret cpo for phoenix.

The next step would be to locate another piece of birch plywood to use as a blank and hopefully I have enough laminate for one more panel. This time I’ll cut the shape before doing anything else. Trying to rush the work only caused me further delay! Ugh.

I wanted to get started on this game for some time, as it was a huge childhood favorite, both in full size and on the Atari 2600. I’ve had it for almost a year now and have slowly gathered extra pcbs and a few parts necessary to get started. (Check out my other post to see it’s arrival Phoenix Cabaret Added) The plan was to do some minor cosmetic repair, clean up the cabinet, swap out the pcb and move on. I figured I could work on it during the down time of the other major projects I had going on.

I wanted to install a double jamma adaptor from Mike’s Arcade so I could throw Pleiads in the cab as well. With my limited space I’m always looking to maximize the use of floor space and those two games work well together. It never quite works out according to plan, though. The first step was to strip out all the parts, label them and stash them in a tote for safe keeping. Once that was done I could haul the cabinet into the garage and look over the damage.

Once in the garage I was able to check out the weird corner repair and some other minor damage. Apparently one of the previous owners decided that using wood filler would make a nice repair. It didn’t. Problem is they didn’t use any support in the repair and didn’t do any sanding or even a complete repair job. No big deal, I would just re-do the repair and maybe just re-laminate the sides. I’d be keeping this one after all and it was worth the effort. So I popped off the wood filler and then figured I could strip off the laminate. Nope. The laminate was firmly attached and the particle board so flaky that it just made it worse. Crap. I just made a hole lot more work for myself.

So now I’ve got to undo all the brackets and carefully break apart the cabinet so I’ll have pieces to use as templates or possibly to re-use. I wasn’t planning on such a complete restoration and wanted this to go as quick as possible. I discovered an odd manufacturing bit about centuri cabarets while disassembling this thing. There are no glue joints at all. Every panel is held in place against some blocking and with simple carriage bolts. I was able to take the whole thing apart, without damaging the major pieces, in about 20 minutes. The bottom and the cracked piece in the back were the only fallout beside the side panels. What a fantastic way to assemble the cab.

The next step would be to cut some panels and laminate them. The phoenix cabaret had laminate on both sides, no paint, other than the brackets. I ordered some wood grain and black wilsonart laminate from Menards and would move forward once it was ready for pickup.

A smaller subset of the larger restoration, but still important, is the coin door. This particular door wasn’t too difficult to restore, with the 12 carriage bolts on the front causing me the most grief. The completed door looks great and I can’t wait to put it back on the cabinet.

To begin the restoration I stripped the parts off and put them in a plastic tote for safe keeping. Then I shipped off the metal door and frame to the powder coating facility I’ve been using recently, Pro-Tek. With the weather starting to change here in the Midwest, I didn’t want to risk painting this myself. Painting a framed coin door that cannot be disassembled requires a little skill, patience and time. There just wasn’t enough time. Pro-Tek would be running the color I needed, satin black, in a day or two so I sent over enough parts to qualify for the basic lot charge. A few days later I had the finished door in my hands and it looked fantastic, with a smooth and even finish. No wasted time or concern about cold weather. Here are a few before and after shots of the door before painting.

With the door ready to go it was time to find replacement carriage bolts. I didn’t have the 1 inch 10-24 black carriage bolts on hand, but I had a plain steel version. A common problem with new carriage bolts is they tend to have raised lettering on the top. Not something you want displayed on your newly restored control panel as the original hardware was smooth. This door used 12 carriage bolts, ugh. Plus the control panel has a bunch in the same size. I took a batch out to the garage and used the bench grinder to remove the lettering. I followed that up with a course and then fine grit sandpaper step to smooth out the rough marks made by the grinder. I didn’t do this by hand; I put each bolt into my cordless drill and spun it at the maximum speed. It worked well. To paint them I stuck the bolts into the edge of a scrap piece of cardboard. I lightly primed, then painted with black Rustoleum with a final clear coat for durability. Overall this was a pain and I will be ordering some carriage bolts for next time!

The coin mech assembly was simple, but had some parts that couldn’t be disassembled completely. I was able to rotate a few parts around on their rivets and did my best to clean everything using a toothbrush and some simple green. Lots of crud came loose. After drying everything completely, I used a product called Never Dull metal polish on the chrome and any easily accessible metal surfaces.

Never Dull is sold in a small metal can and looks like a big roll of cotton wadding. Most automotive stores sell it or some variation of it. It smells, but it sure does take the dirt and grime off metal parts. A shame the big chrome components aren’t visible from the outside as they turned out great. The return buttons were corroded and polishing them by hand would be a pain. I loaded them into my cordless drill and spun them at high speed, this made the cleaning and polishing quick and easy. I couldn’t get all the pitting out, but they looked better than before. The exterior coin return chutes were plastic and cleaned up with soap and water, so did a pair of “brownie” style .900 token mechanisms that I’ll use to replace the metal quarter mechs. Once it was all dry, I put the door back together. Here is the result.

The next step in this project is to finish putting the control panel back together and then putting everything back in the cabinet. The basement water issue has delayed my progress on this, but I hope to have it back up and running by the end of this month.

I was just getting into the hobby and was amazed by the incredible restorations I saw on RGVAC and BYOAC. I couldn’t believe the attention to detail shown in some of the restorations. The step by step tutorials really got me itching to try my hand at a full restoration. Fate would provide me with some free time in the summer of 2001, so I decided to try my hand at fixing up a Ms. Pac-Man CT. I purchased some cabinets from Troy Smith of arcade unlimited in 2001. We drove down to his place and picked up a Tempest UR and a Ms Pac-Man CT, paid a little more than I would now, but I was still a newbie. I got the games home and the tempest worked just fine (and did for many years), but the ms pac was another story. Here are some pics of the game before anything was done.

The game had some water damage on the bottom few inches of the cabinet and overall looked like crap. Since I planned to keep this one, I figured I could spend a lot of time trying to clean and restore the cab, or I could remake the cabinet and just re-use all the metal parts. Essentially I would have a brand new Ms. Pac-Man CT. It was time to practice my woodworking skills. First part was to break down the cabinet so I could reproduce the parts. Then I jumped into making the blanks out of birch veneer plywood. A bit more expensive than standard plywood, but it has a much smoother finish and would take the laminate well. I used the original panels to route exact duplicates from the blanks I had made. I then laminated the pieces with a standard grade laminate I found at Home Depot (long since discontinued). I routed out the openings and trimmed the pieces flush before starting to assemble the cabinet.

The cabinet was shaping up nicely. I still had to make the “door” that swings with the top, the control panel sides and the top itself. I purchased new control panel parts from Arcade Shop, it was easier. I used the original panels on the second CT I made. Yes, I made two at the same time. I had to buy full sheets of material and ended up with enough to make two complete CT’s, with some repro parts from Arcade Shop added into the mix.

After assembling the cabinet, it was time to make the top. I used the original as a template and cut two new pieces. I couldn’t find 1″ thick plywood, so I laminated two pieces of 1/2″ thick plywood together to create the correct thickness. I didn’t have a nice router table, just a plunge router and some hardwood pieces to guide my cuts. I did the best I could and it turned out just fine.

With the tops completed I could paint them black and continue with assembly. I have been painting any cabinet edges black that I felt might be seen if not properly covered with t-molding. It just made sense to paint before assembly as the CT had a somewhat difficult construction. With the tops attached I started the process of rebuilding the interior, attaching the control panels, installing the new Happ Vison Pro monitor and installing the coin door. It was shaping up nicely.

The new Happ Vision Pro monitor would really make this project shine. While I had the old monitor, the screen burn just didn’t make me think “new cab”, plus Happ is local to me and I waited for a sale! With the monitor in place I could start wiring up the cab using Bob Roberts handy wiring guide. If you’ve never wired up a cabinet before, his guide makes it pretty easy. Once you wire up one, the rest are easy. The mounting brackets are from Kerry Stair, another local. He was making lots of cabinets at one point and had these custom made.

With the monitor in place I finished up the cabinet wiring, the control panel wiring and installed my Ms. Pac-Man pcb. This pcb has Clay’s 24 in 1 kit installed, so I also picked up some multi pac man artwork for under the glass. It adds a nice touch. The game has played flawlessly ever since I finished it up and always seems to get played during parties or when ever family or friends come over.

In this update I get a little closer to finishing off the restoration of this 31 yr old vector classic. With the weather quickly changing here in the Midwest, I needed to finish up all the painting before it gets too cold outside. So, I’ll highlight the replacement side pieces, attach the base, and show the “bondo” work. Then I’ll move into masking and painting the game. I think the end result is truly fantastic. The game looks like it just rolled off the factory assembly line. I left off with the creation of a template for the area around the control panel as the other side of the game had some damage at that spot. The next step was to dry fit the bottom/back piece I had assembled along with the remaining lower cabinet section. I wanted to make sure everything was going to fit before I started gluing and nailing it all together. Once the fit was verified I attached the bottom/back piece to the repaired side. This would give me something to support the final replacement section. I attached it using some blocking based on the original positions from the cab (before I broke it apart). I then used biscuits and my joiner to glue the new piece in place. I immediately attached the new piece to the bottom/back using more blocking. When changing from 2″ to 1-1/4″ finish nails in the nail gun, a 2″ nail got stuck in the gun and ended up popping through the side of the cabinet. Of course my hand just happened to be in that exact spot. I took about half an inch of nail in the palm, which was more surprising than painful. I now shoot off a test nail into scrap after each size change. The nail pic shows the difference in size. You can also see how the original layer of blue painters tape has peeled up in some areas, I’ll need to redo that before painting.

I’ll let the assembly set up over night to make sure it dries completely. While it was drying I started filling in the gaps between the new and old panel. Brian Jones of gamestencils recommended Evercoat brand filler products for use with vinyl. I ordered the metal glaze product online and gave it a shot. It has a much cleaner application than Bondo, that’s for sure, but it is difficult to apply on a vertical surface. It sands easier and provides a smooth finish, but the dry times are very fast. If you’ve never used a filler before, try bondo first, it’s a little more forgiving. Next time I will use bondo for deep gaps and initial filling, followed by a finish layer of Evercoat. Should be a winning combo.

I ended up doing a few coats of filler in order to get the joint to look seamless. After the final sanding, I flipped the cabinet and tackled the damaged control panel section. I cut off the bad area using my circular saw and the saw board. I cleaned up the cut off area with a chisel and sandpaper, then used my joiner to cut a slot for a biscuit. I laminated a small replacement piece with leftover white and black vinyl and glued it into place. Once dry I positioned the router template I made previously, and cut the block to the correct shape. I just need to cut the slot for the t molding, but I prefer to do that after any filler work. I didn’t have to do as much filler work on this side as the seam was better, not necessarily a good sign as the cab may not be square, I’ll check it later.

After everything was dry and sanded, I stood the cab up and did a few final repairs before starting to prep the cab for paint. I glued down a raised chunk on the top of the cabinet, and replaced a badly offset piece of blocking where the bezel would sit. I let that stuff dry and then started to mask off the sides and internal parts of the cab. I gave the existing black laminate on the front a good light sanding so it would take the paint and then wiped everything down to remove dust.

With the prep work complete I mixed up some semi gloss black enamel from Rustoleum. I mixed it with a little mineral spirits to thin the paint and allow a nice flow through the HVLP paint gun. The first coat went on perfect, no bugs! I wheeled it into the garage and allowed it to dry for two days.

With the black nice and dry I removed the masking and started the prep work necessary to paint the white sides. Another KLOV’er had contacted me and asked for a scan of the side art. He’d been on the hunt for Vectorbeam Space War art for a few years and was willing to produce his own with a scan. Since I had to re-mask the artwork anyway, I decided to make the effort and scan the art. Here you can see my laptop and HP window scanner making quick work of the job. I sent off the scans and also provided a copy to gamestencils in case Brian chooses to make the artwork available. Limited demand I’m sure, but drop him a line if you need the artwork.

I let the cabinet dry for another two days and then got it ready for t-molding. Its looking good so far. Any areas that I missed with the router got hit with the slot cutting bit. I positioned the cab on my work horses so I could remove the furniture dolly I had attached to the base. I also attached the two “runners” on the bottom. The original bottom did not have leg levelers, just unfinished hardwood runners. They would take all the abuse from moving the game around. Next it was on to the t-molding which went smoothly. I notch my corners and just hammer the molding in place with a rubber mallet. I don’t use hot glue unless the slot is too loose to hold the molding.
